Why ‘Staying Out of It’ is Still Taking a Side

There’s a comforting lie that many people tell themselves: “I don’t get involved in politics.” “I stay out of the drama.” “I’m neutral.”

But here’s the truth: Neutrality doesn’t exist.

Black beads on a dark surface spell "NO RACISM, NO HOMOPHOBIA, NO SEXISM, NO VIOLENCE, NO EXCUSES," creating a strong anti-discrimination message.

Silence Benefits the Status Quo

When an injustice happens, doing nothing isn’t neutrality—it’s quiet support for the system that allowed it. Oppressors rely on inaction because it’s easier to maintain power when people stay silent.

‘Both Sides’ Isn’t Always a Thing

There’s a difference between genuine debate and false equivalency. Not every issue has a ‘good people on both sides’ situation. Some things are just wrong. Pretending otherwise isn’t neutrality—it’s avoidance.

What You Can Do Instead

  1. Educate Yourself – Learn about the issues before dismissing them as ‘not your problem.’

  2. Use Your Voice – You don’t have to be loud, but you do have to be clear.

  3. Support Those Who Speak Up – Not everyone can fight every battle, but we can amplify those who do.

You don’t have to be an activist. You don’t have to argue online. But make no mistake—choosing to ‘stay out of it’ is still a choice. Which side of history will you stand on?
