Not everyone believes that video games can help our mental health, but they can. They’ve been a huge part of my self-care toolkit, and I want to share some games that have brought me peace, comfort, and happiness. Whether you’re dealing with stress or anxiety, or just want to relax and unwind, there’s something on this list for everyone.
So, grab a cozy blanket, maybe a cup of tea, and let's dive in!
1. The Elder Scrolls Online

I wasn’t always an MMORPG fan, but The Elder Scrolls Online changed my mind. There’s something deeply comforting about losing yourself in a vast, beautiful world like Tamriel. Whether exploring lush forests, trying to resource-manage my loot (why can’t I get rid of anything 😅), or dancing in town with other players, ESO offers this perfect blend of adventure and calm. It’s not all about combat. I often find peace riding my mount through scenic landscapes, sometimes just climbing to the top of a mountain to take in the view or fishing by a quiet river. And with a surprisingly welcoming community, it feels less like a game and more like a supportive escape from the daily grind. 🏔️
2. Animal Crossing: New Horizons

This game helped many people escape during the pandemic crisis (check out this article from The Guardian). The adorable villagers, the gentle music, and the endless possibilities for decorating your island make it the perfect game for a mental break. There’s no way to “lose,” and no hard deadlines—just fishing, catching bugs, arranging flowers, and chatting with cute animals. It’s honestly just pure, unadulterated joy wrapped in a video game. It’s cute, peaceful, and just the stress relief the doctor ordered when life gets too hectic. 🍃
3. Journey
Sometimes, all you need is a beautiful experience to get lost in, and that’s exactly what Journey offers. It’s a short game—you can finish it in just a couple of hours—but the impact it leaves is huge. You play as a mysterious robed figure traveling across a vast, stunning desert. There’s no dialogue, just visuals and music that tell a story of resilience and hope. It’s a game that feels like a meditative experience, especially when you connect with another player online. That wordless, emotional connection with a stranger who’s also on their journey is something I won’t forget. 🌅
4. The Sims 4

Okay, I have to mention The Sims 4. It’s my go-to when I want to chill and not think too hard. There’s something incredibly satisfying about creating your perfect little world—building houses, designing characters, and even just watching the daily chaos unfold. It’s a great way to relax, and there’s no wrong way to play. If you’re like me and love losing yourself in creativity, this game is a must. And let’s be real—sometimes, we just need a bit of light-hearted drama that we can control. 😉
5. Gris

If you’re in the mood for something emotionally impactful, this one’s for you. Gris is a game that’s more about the experience than the challenge. This platformer explores a world that mirrors the emotional journey of the protagonist among a gorgeous art style and hauntingly beautiful soundtrack. It’s like playing a piece of interactive art. Gris helped me process my emotions in a gentle, reflective way. Fair warning, you may want some tissues nearby for the end. I didn’t expect my reaction. I’m planning on playing it again soon. 🎨

These games boost mental wellness and bring comfort, through gentle gameplay, beautiful visuals, or a sense of accomplishment. If you haven’t played some of these yet, give them a try—they’re worth it. And remember, it’s okay to take a break, curl up with a good game, and give yourself the care you deserve.
